It is also an excellent resource for students studying environmental disease resulting from the heavy metal mercury. It is estimated 60,000 babies are born each year in the United States with mercury-related diseases from the burning of coal in power stations. World wide, this is a significant problem. Mercury also enters the environment and the food chain. Suresh Bhargava is working on monitoring mercury at power stations. The next step is to remove it at the source.

    Students researching the work of practising scientists might find that Dr James Rabeau, working in the field of Quantum cryptography provides an interesting and unusual case study. He creates nanodiamonds which have imperfections and are therefore able to generate a stream of single photons that can be used to send coded messages. The physical structure itself prevents any efforts to hack into the code and so protects electronic data.
